Fort Craig Historic Site
Fort Craig is located in southcentral New Mexico 35 miles south of Socorro. Established in 1854, the fort’s mission was to safeguard the area’s settlers and the travelers on El Camino Real from Apache, Navajo and Comanche raiders. By 1862 Fort Craig has become the largest of the military posts that spread across the Indian Country of the West. The fort was home to the legendary Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Cavalry and 38th and 125th infantry. After the outbreak of the Civil War the first and largest battle of the war in the West was fought near the fort, the Battle of Valverde. The fort was permanently abandoned in 1885.
PLIA provides information and sells educational products, publications and maps at the Fort Craig Visitor Center.
