Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge: Merritt Island is one of more than 500 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System, a network of lands and waters adminstered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service specifically for the protection of wildlife and wildlife habitat. Refuges are biologically diverse and individually unique, yet each is a part of a larger ecosystem which includes us. Maintaining healthy ecosystems is to our own benefit, and the stewardship of our earth, wildlife, and habistats is a responsibility we all share.
